If you are a careful user of English, avoid anyways because:

  • the original anyway works perfectly
  • any, as I’ve discussed earlier, generally uses singular words. Note that the other words blended with any also use singular words: anytime, anywhere, anyhow, anybody, anyone, anything. I think perhaps that anyway was derived from in any way.
  • anyways is considered informal and colloquial–forgivable in conversations, but not suitable for writing. Using anyways is similar to using wanna instead of want to or using coz instead of because.

  1. Hi Ms. Janet!

In your post on anyway(s). The ‘it’ on the first sentence must be ‘if’. Is there a pun intended since you are talking about being careful about the English language? J
